9,000 students from Tamil Nadu to take IIT entrance exam today

CHENNAI: Around 9,000 students from the state will appear for the IIT-JEE on Sunday at six centres - Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Trichy and Tirunelveli. More than five lakh students will take the exam nationwide.
These students will compete for around 10,000 seats in 15 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Institute of Technology at the Banaras Hindu University and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
Students taking the exam this year are likely to be the last batch of students to do so in the current format as the Ministry of Human Resource Development is likely to introduce the Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test from the next academic year.
"There is no clarity on the issue as there has not been any official announcement from the ministry yet," said Ajay Antony, course director at TIME, an institute that trains students for the exam. "This announcement is significant for students who are planning to take the exam next year as it gives a lot of weightage to the board exam marks. As of now, students can make do with a minimum of 60% in the boards," he added.
This is also the first time students will be answering the exam on an OMR sheet using a pen. From now on, students in the general category will have to get a minimum aggregate score of 35% and at least 10% in each of the individual sections to qualify for the rank list. In addition to this, with students of OBC category being provided 10% relaxation in the minimum marks required as per a Supreme Court order a separate rank list will also be brought out for the OBC candidates. Separate rank lists will also be prepared for SC and ST categories.
Last year, 4.86 lakh students took the exam. The examination has also seen a 25% rise in the number of applications from female students after free online application was introduced for this year. The exam has seen the largest number of applications from Kanpur followed by Andhra Pradesh in the Madras zone.
