Bluetooth receivers embedded in ears which could be detected only by an ENT surgeon. These are not gadgets deployed by undercover agents of international spying networks like CIA or Mossad. These are instruments used by our own unemployed youths appearing for examinations held by Staff Selection Commission, entrusted with recruiting subordinate staff for the central government establishments in the country. "We caught hold of 200 candidates who were using Generation Next manipulation during the examinations held in Chhattisgarh," N K Raghupathy, chairman, SSC, said on Thursday.
He said the micro camera or spycams as they are known, pick up the video images of the question paper and transmit the same via a Bluetooth kept 50 meters away from the candidate. "His agent could monitor the same either in a laptop or a mobile phone. Then he gives the right answer to the candidate via the Bluetooth embedded in the latter's ears," said Raghupathy.
Manipulation and cheating in examinations and recruitments have come of age, he said. The SSC has initiated criminal proceedings against manipulators. "The software we use in evaluating the answer sheets are capable of detecting any kind of abnormalities and forgeries committed by the candidates. We have simplified the recruitment process so that all candidates get a level playing field. So there is no need for them to resort to manipulations and forgeries," said Raghupathy.
The SSC chairman disclosed that recruitment tests and personal interviews are being held in 13 regional languages to help candidates from non-Hindi regions. "They can have their personal interviews in their mother tongue and depending on the region from which they appear for the recruitment. The switching over to region al languages has paid rich dividends. There has been a four-fold increase in the number of candidates," he said.
